Privacy Policy

Who We Are

RootBase is built and maintained by RootBase Labs LLC, a company registered in Arkansas. In this policy, "we," "our," and "us" refer to RootBase Labs LLC.

Data Collection

RootBase does not collect, transmit, or store any personal information on our servers. All data you enter into the app, including plant names, care logs, photos, notes, and schedules, is stored locally on your device. The only time this data leaves your device is if you turn on iCloud Sync, as described below, or send it somewhere yourself: by exporting a backup file, sharing a photo, or copying plant data to share with another app.

RootBase also downloads plant reference data from Apple's iCloud servers, as described under Plant Reference Data below. That download doesn't include any of your data.

If you email us, including to suggest a plant species, we receive what you send, as described under Emailing Us below.

We do not use analytics services, advertising frameworks, crash reporting tools, or any third-party SDKs that collect user data.

Data Storage

Your plant data is stored in a local database on your device. RootBase also keeps up to seven daily snapshots of your plants and care history on your device so you can restore an earlier state. This data is not accessible to us or to any third party. We do not operate servers that receive, process, or store your information.

iCloud Sync

RootBase gives you the option to sync your data through iCloud so it stays the same on every device signed in to your Apple Account. iCloud Sync is off until you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any time in the app's Settings. When it is on, your plant data, including photos, care logs, notes, and schedules, is stored in the private database of your personal iCloud account, which is provided and operated by Apple.

We do not have access to your iCloud account or to any data RootBase stores in it. Data stored in iCloud is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy and the iCloud terms you have agreed to with Apple.

Plant Reference Data

RootBase occasionally downloads an updated list of plant species from Apple's iCloud servers, so its suggestions stay current. The download doesn't include any of your data, and works without an iCloud account. As with any internet request, Apple's servers see your device's network address. We don't receive it or anything else about you.

Emailing Us

If you choose to suggest a plant species, RootBase opens a draft email in your mail app, filled in with what you searched for and the version of the species list on your device. Nothing is sent unless you send it, and RootBase adds nothing to the email beyond what you see in it.

If you send it, or email us any other way, we receive your email address, any name your mail app includes, and what you wrote. We use this only to review your suggestion or answer your question. Our email is hosted by Porkbun, which stores messages on our behalf. If you would like us to delete emails you have sent us, ask at support@rootbaseapp.com and we will.

Data Sharing

We do not share any data with third parties, except where required by law. We have no access to your plant data, and emails you send us are read only by us and stored by our email host. There are no advertising partners, analytics providers, or affiliated entities that receive information from RootBase. If you turn on iCloud Sync, your data is transmitted directly between your devices and your own iCloud account; it is not sent to us. When RootBase downloads plant reference data, Apple's servers see your device's network address, as with any internet request, but nothing else about you is sent.

Camera, Photos, and Location

RootBase asks for access to your camera and photo library only so you can add photos of your plants. Photos you add are stored with your plant data as described above.

Photo Location is off by default. If you turn it on, RootBase reads your location when you take a photo in the app and saves it in that photo's file. The location stays with the photo, including when you share it or when it syncs through iCloud. RootBase does not track your location otherwise and never sends it to us.

Notifications

Care reminders are off until you turn them on. They are scheduled on your device, and no reminder content is sent to us.

Data Retention and Deletion

Since your data resides on your device and, if you turn on iCloud Sync, in your own iCloud account, you have complete control over it at all times. You can delete individual plants and their associated care history within the app. Uninstalling RootBase removes all app data from your device. If you have used iCloud Sync, turning it off or uninstalling the app does not remove your data from iCloud; you can manage or delete it through your device's iCloud settings. There is no RootBase account to delete. If you have emailed us, you can ask us to delete those emails, as described under Emailing Us.

Children's Privacy

The RootBase app does not collect personal information, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13. The only information we receive is what someone chooses to send us by email.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this Privacy Policy, we will post the revised version on this page with an updated effective date. If we ever introduce features that change how data is handled, we will update this policy before those features are released.
